Marvel’s top boss, Kevin Feige, has responded to the rumors that Chris Evans will return to play Steve Rogers/Captain America once again. He did not personally shoot down the rumor, but he pointed to Evans’ own statement that it was “news to me” that the actor would come back. Still, from the sound of it, fans should not get their hopes up to see Evans back as Captain America.
“I rarely answer ‘no’ to anything anymore because things are always surprising me with what happens, but that rumor, I think, was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself,” Feige told EW.
Deadline broke the news in January that Evans would return to play Captain America again, not in a new film of his own but instead in a smaller role not unlike Robert Downey Jr. in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Marvel has never flatly denied the report, and that remains the case. The report also never said that Evans had made a deal to return, only that it was a possibility.
