James Cameron’s Avatar has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to reclaim its top spot for the highest-grossing movie in the history of film. Thanks to its re-release in China, Avatar ($2.802 billion) has pulled ahead of Endgame ($2.792 billion).
Avatar needed around $7 million to pass Endgame, and it ended up bringing in $12.3 million in China over the weekend. The Avatar and Avengers franchises are both owned by Disney–following the acquisition of Fox–so the House of Mouse is the real winner here.
Avatar producer Jon Landau told Deadline, “We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theaters during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support. We are hard at work on the next Avatar films and look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story for years to come.”
